Swallowing Therapy
We specialize in the treatment of swallowing problems (dysphagia) due to:
- Neurological conditions such as stroke, brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and muscular dystrophy among others
- Cancer of the mouth, throat or esophagus
- Injury or surgery involving the head and neck
Goals for our clients include:
- Reducing their risk of choking and aspiration
- Bringing back their enjoyment of eating and drinking
- Maintaining proper nutrition and hydration
- Progressing from puree to regular consistency diets*
- Transitioning from thick to thin liquids*
- Weaning them off a feeding tube*
*If safely tolerated by the patient

We provide the following treatment techniques:
- VitalStim® Swallowing Therapy – a non invasive external electrical stimulation therapy that reeducates the throat muscles
- The McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program (MDTP) – an exercise-based program to treat swallowing disorders in adults
- Postural changes such as the chin-tuck position to improve airway protection
- Swallowing exercises
